Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop watch collaboration inspired by the Royal Oak

Swatch x Audemars Piguet Reveal the “Royal Pop” Collaboration

The new collaboration between Swatch and Audemars Piguet has officially been revealed, and it’s already one of the most talked-about watch releases of the year.

After stirring up speculation online over the last few days of what the collaboration would look like, the two Swiss brands introduced a new project called the “Royal Pop.” The release merges elements from Swatch’s playful design philosophy with the heritage of Audemars Piguet, one of the most prestigious watchmakers in the world.

The collaboration quickly gained attention across social media, especially after rumors suggested it could give one of Audemars Piguet’s most famous designs a more accessible spin.

Inspired by the Iconic Royal Oak

A major reason for the hype is the connection to the legendary Audemars Piguet Royal Oak.

First introduced in 1972 and designed by Gérald Genta, the Royal Oak became one of the most recognizable luxury sports watches ever made and helped cement Audemars Piguet’s reputation in high-end watchmaking.

The Swatch collaboration draws inspiration from this iconic design language, incorporating details like the octagonal shape, exposed screws, and textured “Petite Tapisserie” dial pattern that fans associate with the Royal Oak.

However, the Royal Pop takes the concept in a completely different direction compared to traditional luxury watches.

A Pocket Watch Instead of a Wristwatch

One of the biggest surprises about the drop is that the Royal Pop isn’t a traditional wristwatch, and much to the dismay of fans online.

Instead, the collaboration features a wearable pocket watch design, inspired by Swatch’s classic Pop watches from the 1980s. The timepiece can be worn on a lanyard, clipped to clothing, or displayed in different ways, offering a more playful and unconventional approach to watch design.

Each model features a colorful aesthetic and mechanical movement derived from Swatch’s SISTEM51 platform, with around 90 hours of power reserve.

The collection includes eight different colorways, each referencing the number eight in different languages as a nod to the octagonal Royal Oak design.

Final thoughts on Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop

While some fans have expressed disappointment in the new AP x Swatch collab being a pocket watch, we think the pieces will speak for themselves and of course sell out.

While unconfirmed at the moment, there is speculation the retail price will be between $400-$420, making this collab another accessible way to connect with a high luxury brand.  This collab is reminiscent of the Swatch x Omega or MoonSwatch collab and it will be interesting to watch public perception shift as we near the relase.
