Ten years ago, Travis Scott entered a defining new stage of his career with the release of Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. The Album Gave Travis Scott His First No. 1
Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight arrived almost exactly one year after Travis released his debut studio album, Rodeo. While Rodeo established his artistic identity, Birds proved that his atmospheric sound could translate into mainstream success.
The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 88,000 equivalent album units, giving Travis the first chart topping album of his career. It initially premiered through Travis Scott and Chase B’s WAV Radio show before becoming available as an Apple Music exclusive.
Its commercial performance represented an important turning point. Travis was no longer simply an ambitious artist with a cult following and high profile collaborators, he had become a legitimate headliner with the ability to command the top of the charts.

Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight served as the bridge between the raw experimentation of Rodeo and the blockbuster ambition of ASTROWORLD.
The album sharpened Travis Scott’s ability to build immersive environments around accessible songs. Its combination of moody production, carefully selected features and arena-ready hooks would become central to his approach on later releases.
It also showed how effectively Travis could turn an album into a complete visual era. The striking Nick Knight cover artwork, bird imagery, merchandise and live presentation helped give the project an identity that extended beyond the music itself.
By the time ASTROWORLD arrived in 2018, Travis had developed the formula on a much larger scale. However, many of the ideas that powered that moment were already taking shape throughout Birds.
