Apple Introduces Its First Foldable iPhone – The iPhone Duo
Apple has officially introduced the iPhone Duo, revealing the company’s first foldable smartphone and one of the most dramatic changes to the iPhone since its original debut.
Unveiled during Apple’s September event, the iPhone Duo uses a book-style folding design that allows the device to function as both an everyday smartphone and a compact tablet. It represents Apple’s long-awaited entry into a foldable market previously led by companies including Samsung, Google and Huawei.
More importantly, the Duo signals a completely new direction for Apple’s most important product line. Rather than another yearly refinement of the familiar iPhone design, Apple is introducing an entirely different way to use the device.
The iPhone Duo Opens Into a Compact Tablet
When closed, the iPhone Duo features a 5.5-inch exterior display designed for familiar everyday tasks such as messaging, taking calls, browsing social media and capturing photos.
Opening the device reveals a much larger 7.8-inch folding display, transforming the Duo into something closer to a pocket-sized tablet. The expanded screen creates additional space for watching videos, editing content and working across multiple applications.
Apple also demonstrated the ability to run apps beside one another, bringing an iPad-like approach to multitasking onto an iPhone for the first time.
The book-style format places the device in direct competition with premium foldables such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and Google’s Pixel Fold lineup. However, Apple is betting that the integration between the iPhone, iOS and its wider ecosystem will separate the Duo from existing foldable devices.

Apple Pencil Comes to the iPhone
Another major addition is Apple Pencil support, making the Duo the first iPhone designed to work with Apple’s stylus.
Users will be able to draw, write and navigate across the larger internal display when the device is unfolded. The feature could make the iPhone Duo particularly appealing to designers, photographers, editors and other creatives who want more control than a traditional smartphone screen can provide.
It also further blurs the line between the iPhone and iPad, giving the Duo capabilities previously reserved for Apple’s tablets.
Touch ID Returns With a New Purpose
The iPhone Duo also brings back Touch ID, with the fingerprint sensor integrated into the device’s power button.
Apple previously used a similar side-mounted Touch ID system on select iPad models. Its inclusion on the Duo appears to be a practical response to the phone’s thin folding construction and changing orientation.
The decision makes the Duo one of the biggest departures from Apple’s current iPhone formula, which has relied primarily on Face ID since the introduction of the iPhone X.

A20 Pro Power and a New Camera System
Inside, the iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, designed to handle the additional demands of its dual-display format, multitasking features and Apple Intelligence tools.
Apple has also equipped the foldable with a multi-camera system intended to remain functional across its different configurations. Users can take photos while the device is closed or take advantage of the larger display while composing and reviewing images.
That flexibility could make the Duo especially useful for mobile photography, video playback and on-the-go content creation.
How Much Does the iPhone Duo Cost?
The iPhone Duo will start at $2,000 for the 256GB model, placing it firmly at the top of Apple’s smartphone lineup.
That price makes the device more expensive than a conventional flagship iPhone and positions it as an early adopter luxury product rather than a direct replacement for every iPhone owner.
Apple is expected to offer the device in multiple storage configurations and two launch colors. Final availability may also be more limited than the company’s standard iPhone releases as Apple begins manufacturing its first folding model.
Apple Enters Its Foldable Era
Apple may be arriving later than its competitors, but the company’s entry could push folding smartphones further into the mainstream.
The iPhone Duo is more than an experimental side product. It marks the beginning of a new category within Apple’s ecosystem and gives customers the company’s first genuine alternative to the traditional rectangular iPhone.
Whether consumers are willing to spend $2,000 will ultimately determine its initial reach. Still, the Duo is already Apple’s most significant iPhone design change in years—and potentially an early look at where the entire product line is heading next.
