From Producing to the Mic
Before 7teen was making music of his own, he was producing. That chapter still lives in his Spotify name, prodby7teen, and when The Kitchen asked which album changed his life, he knew exactly where to go: Travis Scott’s Rodeo.
In our 7teen interview, the conversation went from Cactus Jack to Coldplay, pre-show prayers, and why a plate full of sides is all he needs. But one of his strongest answers came when we asked about his biggest flex. For 7teen, hearing fans sing unreleased songs means something. He’s thankful people are showing up for the music he wants to make.
We caught up with 7teen as part of The Kitchen’s coverage of Orlando’s underground scene. Get into the conversation below, and follow him on Instagram at @by7teen.
Travis Scott’s Rodeo Helped Shape 7teen’s Start
The Kitchen: What’s one album that changed your life?
7teen: This is going to sound funny as hell, but Rodeo by Travis Scott. I used to produce before anything—that’s why my Spotify name is prodby7teen—and he was a big inspiration at first. I mean, I rock with Travis Scott still. Shoutout to Cactus Jack. It just defined a lot for me. I went from producing to now making music.
Coldplay, Michael Jackson, and a Mount Rushmore That Needed More Room
The Kitchen: Who is on your Mount Rushmore, or your top four favorite artists?
7teen: This is going to be a different one. Yo, who is the lead singer of Coldplay? Chris Martin. We gotta have Chris Martin up there. Gotta have Michael Jackson. I feel like I gotta put Ye (formerly Kanye West), but I’m going to put Travis Scott up there too because I fucked with bruh heavy. Damn, I have one more and need to really think about this one. Ed Sheeran, for sure.
Mac and Cheese With the Crust on Top
The Kitchen: You know I’m The Kitchen, so I have to ask: What’s your favorite food, snacks, or munchies?
7teen: Macaroni and cheese! Mac and cheese is my favorite. You know what I’m talking about, with the little crust on the top? I don’t know why, but I’m a sides person. I know it’s fucking weird, but I’m like, bro, I love my sides! People always hit me like, “Bro, you’re not getting any chicken, any meat?” And I’m like, “Nah, twin, I’m chilling with the sides.”
Prayer Before the Show
The Kitchen: Anything you need to do to get in the mood to record, or anything you do before you hit the stage?
7teen: I feel like I have to pray, bro. That’s not something people see all the time. When I’m backstage with my team, I like to do a quick prayer 10 minutes before the show, do our little handshakes, and sauce it up. In the studio, we like to smoke a little weed—don’t do drugs, kids! But yeah, it just helps with the vibe and gets things going.
Hearing Fans Sing the Unreleased Songs
The Kitchen: What would you say is your biggest flex most recently that is not related to money?
7teen: I don’t have anything to flex. I’m just glad I’m here, honestly. The numbers are whatever. I’m not chasing the numbers. I’m doing what I like. I’m glad people are listening. Even some of my unreleased songs, people were singing. I’m just thankful for the fans and everyone showing up.
Shoutouts to the People Around Him
The Kitchen: Is there anyone you want to shout out?
17teen: Shoutout No Sleep Studios. Shoutout my brother. Shoutout my managers. Shoutout CSMB. Shoutout to Young Calli for bringing me out to the Smoke Sesh, for real. And shoutout The Kitchen! We Don’t Cook Food.
During his shoutout to his brother, 7teen also showed a tattoo on his arm.
New to 7teen?
The Kitchen: If someone is new to your catalogue, what’s a song to listen to?
7teen: Check out “Button”! “Button” is my latest release on streaming platforms. I dropped it for my birthday in March. It’s my favorite right now, but I do have a lot of unreleased songs—no cap!
